Preventing

By simply preventing hair build up it naturally becomes more manageable. Preventative measures you could use are:

– Isolating your pets from your clothes. This could be achieved by preventing pets from going upstairs. With cats just shut doors to bedrooms.

– Hoovering on a regular basis can make a huge difference to the amount of pet hair floating around the house.

– Brushing or grooming your pets regularly will help to reduce the amount of loose pet hair on them. Thus, reducing the amount of pet hair being collected on your clothes.

The use of water

Water can be a very effective tool in getting up pet hair. This is because the moisture from the water makes the hair heavy and therefore more dense. This then causes the hair to be less able to stick to surfaces. With slightly dampening your clothes, you should find that the pet hair starts to stick you your hand instead of your clothing.

Alternatively, using the same principles, instead of your hand you could use a sponge or cloth. You should find that the hair starts to curl up into a ball and stick to the sponge or cloth and no longer your clothes.

Damp rubber gloves are another option.

Sellotape

Sellotape has a strong grip surface, making it an ideal item in pet hair removal. By simply laying Sellotape on and lifting off will help to remove much of the hair on your clothes.  There are also special lint rollers that act in the same way.

How can you motivate your children to clean?

Your kids are so full of energy, bouncing off the walls, jumping around, making a right  racket. Then you say the words “cleaning” or “tidying” and within seconds that apparently unlimited abundance of energy completely disappears. All of a sudden they’re tired, unwilling to even move from the sofa or bed as they are overcome with exhaustion. It’s an uphill battle to get them to pick up a hoover or a duster let alone use it. After much shouting and arguing, or even eventual bribing, they finally give in and help. However, after 10 minutes of half-hearted cleaning, you find that they have become distracted and are no longer participating.

So how can you motivate your kids to help with cleaning the house?

There are many ways you could motivate your children of all ages. The first method being a reward system. Figure out what your child wants the most, whether that be money or a hobby such as horse riding. Each chore, whether that be hoovering or mopping the floors, could be  exchanged for a reward.

A second method could be to create a positive environment. For example, make cleaning into a game which will cause cleaning to become a fun thing to do instead of the usual boring and monotonous task many perceive domestic cleaning to be. By doing this cleaning then becomes enjoyable therefore more likely to be done. This works particularly well for younger children, who generally prefer to play games, compared to perhaps the older teen, for whom a bribe may be your best bet.

A third method you can use is to set goals. This works well with a reward system as adults as well as children generally work better if they have a goal to reach. For example, by doing X amount of ironing will be worth a certain amount. This will not only motivate your child but hopefully get the job done quicker!

5 funky ways to overcome those tiresome cleaning chores!

It’s a Sunday morning, the birds are singing and the sun is shining. You have just had a lovely lay in after a long week at work and you are finally starting to unwind from that long stressful week you have just had. All of a sudden, the realisation that the hoovering and dusting needs doing. You look around and see a pile of dirty dishes and a mountain of dust and dog hair.   The feeling of dread consumes your body and in that painful moment you have zero motivation to complete your domestic cleaning chores. We have all experienced this right?

Well, do not fear as I have 5 simple ways that could help you get through that Sunday morning cleaning nightmare.

The first, solution is to listen to music. Music is a great way to get you into the mood for cleaning. I would recommend upbeat music as this will hopefully help you to be more productive and get those cleaning tasks completed more quickly.

Do it with a friend? A trusted friend is sometimes a far better motivator than anything else. If a friend is coming over at a set time, that means you are more likely to be up and ready to start cleaning earlier then what would otherwise be the case. In addition, cleaning is far more enjoyable when you are sharing the pain with a friend.

One of the best ways to motivate yourself is to have some sort of reward system. For example, after tidying the living room reward yourself with a 5 minute break or after cleaning the house go watch that box set you’ve been trying to catch up on all week.

Share the chores. Whether you live with family, fellow students or housemates, share the burden of domestic cleaning. Find out whose strengths are what, such as yours might be dusting whilst your brother could be a pro at tidying.

Spread it out over a week. Instead of leaving all that dusting, hovering and general cleaning to be done all in one go, spread it out. If domestic cleaning tasks are spread out over the course of a week then cleaning becomes much more manageable and less time consuming.

If all of this fails then pay for someone to do it for you!

Cloudy Glasses Cleaning Tips

Do you have cloudy glasses? Is your glassware looking a bit grey and dull? Well there are two main reasons behind this irritating cloudy effect.

The first is a process commonly known as etching. Etching is effectively the glass material being gradually worn down over time by simple, general usage of the glassware. In general, etching is a slow process of which one is highly likely to see develop over a considerable amount of time.

The second reason which can cause this cloudy effect is hard water deposits. Hard water deposits can consist of calcium or magnesium ions. This is a process which can occur rather quickly leading to the conclusion that it is unlikely to be caused by etching which is a much slower process.

Whilst etching is permanent and not solvable, hard water deposits are relatively easy to fix. Start off by pouring white vinegar into a reasonable sized bowl. As vinegar is a natural acetic it will likely dissolve any hard mineral deposits. Leave any cloudy glasses to soak for up to 5 minutes, thereafter rinse the glasses with clean, cold water to remove any lingering smell or taste.
