Cloudy Glasses Cleaning Tips

Do you have cloudy glasses? Is your glassware looking a bit grey and dull? Well there are two main reasons behind this irritating cloudy effect.

The first is a process commonly known as etching. Etching is effectively the glass material being gradually worn down over time by simple, general usage of the glassware. In general, etching is a slow process of which one is highly likely to see develop over a considerable amount of time.

The second reason which can cause this cloudy effect is hard water deposits. Hard water deposits can consist of calcium or magnesium ions. This is a process which can occur rather quickly leading to the conclusion that it is unlikely to be caused by etching which is a much slower process.

Whilst etching is permanent and not solvable, hard water deposits are relatively easy to fix. Start off by pouring white vinegar into a reasonable sized bowl. As vinegar is a natural acetic it will likely dissolve any hard mineral deposits. Leave any cloudy glasses to soak for up to 5 minutes, thereafter rinse the glasses with clean, cold water to remove any lingering smell or taste.

How To Get Ink Out of Clothes

A lot of pens are water-based which makes getting ink out very easy.

Blot as much of the undried ink out as you can. Use a water-based stain remover (check the instructions that it can be used with the garment you are working on) to pre-treat the stain and blot again. This way you can get a good proportion of the ink out before you try and wash the garment.

Wash with normal detergent and at normal temperature on its own. As soon as the wash has finished, check the stain and if necessary pre-treat again and put on another wash cycle. Don’t let the garment dry with the stain still visible.

Further tips, including on how to remove ink that is not water-based can be found here.

Things dirtier than your toilet seat!

The toilet seat is not often thought of as one of the cleanest of things in your house! However, it is likely to be one of the things that gets cleaned the most. There are some things which could actually be dirtier than your toilet seat that could also do with a little more regular attention. For example:

Your chopping board – there is 200 times more fecal matter on the average chopping board than a toilet seat!

Your carpet – 4,000 times more bacteria on your carpet than on your toilet seat.

Your purse or wallet – 10 times dirtier than the toilet seat.

What about your mobile phone? Or your keyboard?
